What is the Switch Up Five Pillar approach?

What is the Switch Up Five Pillar approach?

We believe in empowering young people to overcome life’s toughest challenges.

Our Five Pillar approach isn’t just a programme; it’s a comprehensive, tailored strategy designed to ignite lasting change.

Through a unique blend of sport, mentoring, and personal development, we improve mental and physical well-being, equipping individuals with the skills, confidence, and motivation they need to realise their true potential.

Our foundation of support

Our holistic approach is built upon five interconnected pillars, each designed to provide crucial support and foster growth for the young people we serve.

01.

Mentoring

Young people are matched with a dedicated lived experience mentor for one-on-one support.

Mentors provide consistent guidance, encouragement, and a trusted relationship, helping young individuals navigate their challenges and progress on their personal journey.

02.

Physical Activity

We use non-contact boxing and other forms of exercise as a powerful tool to engage young people.

Beyond physical fitness, this pillar significantly contributes to improved physical and mental well-being, discipline, focus, and a positive outlet for energy.

About Physical Health
03.

Counselling

Where required, young people have access to professional counselling services delivered by BACP registered counsellors.

This pillar provides a safe space for young people to process trauma, manage emotions, and develop coping mechanisms, significantly improving their mental health.

Education

We offer tailored alternative education programmes for those who may have struggled in traditional settings.

Our focus includes developing essential functional skills, ensuring young people gain foundational knowledge vital for future success.

05.

Employability

This pillar equips young people with the essential work-ready skills needed to enter the job market.

Designed in collaboration with over 60 business partners, we provide real-world insights and create direct pathways from our programmes into apprenticeships and sustainable employment.

HELPING WITH EMPLOYMENT

How we apply the Five Pillars

Step one: Every young person referred to us undergoes an in-depth assessment.
Step two: This allows us to evaluate the specific level of intervention and support required, ensuring a truly personalised journey.
Step three: Typically, we deploy multiple pillars at the same time, tailored to each individual. This integrated approach enhances their physical and mental well-being, boosts their confidence and social skills, and simultaneously develops their technical and professional employability skills.
Step four: We monitor the progress of each individual in reaching their goals. The team checks in at crucial development stages.
Step five and beyond: Switch Up will endeavour to help individuals along whichever path they choose – but the support never stops, and our door is always open.

Many of our volunteers started as mentees, so there is always the option to help others on their journey.

Our theory of change

Our theory of change is rooted in the belief that holistic, consistent, and personalised support can break cycles of disadvantage.

We meet individuals where they are, providing the specific interventions needed to navigate complex challenges, develop positive identities, and ultimately, become architects of their own successful futures.

How do we measure success?

We measure success not just through statistics, but through the lives that have been transformed.

In 2024 alone:
  • 2253 people supported
  • 1093 people coached
  • 162 young people mentored
  • 65 young people entering employment
  • 82 young people starting education or training courses
  • 59 young people engaged in work experience / volunteering

Ready to see how the Five Pillars can make a difference?

Whether you’re a young person seeking support, a school looking to integrate our programmes, or a community organisation eager to collaborate, we’re here to help.
